Today is 8/24/17, the next available appointment is 10/5/17. So a 6 week wait to transfer my license. I go in today to see if I can get it done without an appointment. Take my number, have a seat. There were 4 of us in there. 4. Of us 4, they told one they don't handle the issue and told them to call to Helena, which the guy said he already did. They told another person they had to make an appointment. They helped 1 older gentleman renew his license, and they told me I had to make an appointment. I told them I did, but it wasn't until October and I needed to get it done for work. Not without an appointment they said. I've lived in PA, UT, NC, and none of them make you get an appointment for this kind of thing. BTW, there was no one else in line after me, just an empty office. What do these clowns do all day?
CliffNotes version of my long review:
Went in today to do a name change. The manager was up in the front watching my every move. When it came time for me to take a picture she followed me and the clerk to watch the picture be taken. This was very unnecessary and very uncomfortable for me. I will be calling Helena and complain maybe even a written letter. No excuse to treat ppl this way!
I went home and got to searching for an office within reasonable driving distance that was not 2-3 months out with appointments. I found one 2.5 hours from Billings. Sold! I arrived to my non-Billings office appointment 30 minutes early. The single person working the office saw me right away. I was done in less than 10 minutes. The person that helped me was pleasant, funny, and extremely helpful. The best part? They confirmed for me that appointments for out of state license conversion are NOT required. Yes, of course, they are preferred. However, if your number is called they are supposed to help you. They even told me the day before my appointment they did three others from Billings that had the exact same complaint I did. They agreed the treatment in the Billings office was ridiculous and followed up with, " you will see this will take less than 10 minutes. It is truly no big deal to do them." My 7-8 minutes in that office was well worth the drive. Plus, I saw some beautiful country I had not before.
1) The Billings Driver Service office is dreadful and "service" should be removed from their name.
It was myself and three other customers in there. My number was called within five minutes of me walking in, I had all of my information with me, and I was promptly, rudely told, "out of state license conversions are appointment only." I was then handed a yellow card with appointment setting information on it. I then very nicely said, "I was told I could just come down and if my number was called would be able to get this done. Nothing online says appointments are necessary, and the person I talked to said they are preferred but not necessary." The reply I got was, "too bad and now you know. You are not getting helped without an appointment. Have a good day." Brilliant.
Someone needs to take a look at the Billings office. There is no reason for what they do. Truly a dreadful experience with the Billings office and I will go to great lengths to avoid it at all costs.
If I can give this office zero I would. The staff that handled me was rude and loud. She embarrassed me by talking so loud like everyone needs to know my business. First, my husband and I walked in when we first moved here to convert our license. We went to the office really early and we are told to schedule online or bu phone. Rediculous! We called to make an appointment and via phone and guess what no one answers the phone. It was early and not a lot of people yet. We set an appointment online and again rediculous! The schedule is month out. So my DL expired because of their sucks!. My husband and I still set an schedule hoping I can covert my license even it was expired. I can’t really say it’s my fault it’s their system, their online appointment. The staff called my name. Got all the required documents from me even my expired DL. She took my picture. I thought it’s going to be fine. Then she said you’re DL is expired. You can’t convert with expired drivers license. Told her the reason why and she said did you purchased a ticket for this it fine but you did not. (Well lady if i knew that I would have it done! Online does’t tell everything.) She told me to make an appointment again online to take a written test and road test. Which needs to be a diffrent schecdule because I need to pass the written test first before I can take the road test. I made an appointment yesterday(11/17/17) the available date is December 22. I don’t understand why I need to take those test! I have a 8 months baby and she freaks out when she don’t see me. It’s stressful! Take note.. she had my DL, she’s been looking for 10 minutes and she didn’t see it expired already? And her voice was so loud like everyone needs to know my business. Very unprofessional!
2) If you are trying to convert your out of state license, SKIP THIS OFFICE, search for one within driving distance (you can go to any city to get this done), set your appointment (while not necessary, they are preferred, and they will ensure service), and trust that any drive you have to make will save you from the pain that is the Billings Driver "Service" office.
I used online appointment scheduler and was in and out in 5 minutes. It would be nice if the forms were online so I could fill them out ahead of time. And then the clerk spent time filling out another form?!? Save a tree folks, computers are our friends.
This office could use a serious lesson in customer service. In the 23 years I have been driving this was hands down the worst interaction with any driver's license service office I have ever experienced. In trying to navigate what I needed to do to convert my out of state license I gave the main number a call. I was told that appointments are preferred, and for most offices those are 2-3 months out, but I could go down to the office and see if my number gets called. That is what I did early one morning.
